By Brian Doyle
One of the quiet things that happens to you when you are a writer,
Or purport to be, or are considered to be, even though all you ever
Did was just keep typing, is that when something sad or terrifying
Happens, people say, Are you going to write about it? And mostly
The answer is no, because you have no wisdom, you have nothing
Incisive or wry or wise to say – you are just a guy who types a lot.
And I haven’t the slightest urge to add to the ocean of bloody rage
Or vengeful prose or religious muck. But after three of my friends
Were roasted to ash on September 11, I couldn’t stop typing about
The men who ran up the stairs to help, and after Newtown I could
Not stop writing about the two women who dove at the murderer,
And now after Boston I can’t stop seeing the runners who ran right
By the finish line to the hospital to give blood, and the people who
Raced toward the blast, and the man whose son died in Najaf, Iraq.
Let me tell you about this man. His son was a Marine corporal. He
Was twenty years old, this kid. After he died his dad drove around
America with a coffin filled with his son’s favorite stuff: his soccer
Ball, his battle boots, his dog tags, his church shoes, his teddy bear.
His dad says wars are stupid and we don’t fight against war enough.
He moved to Boston, to be near his son’s grave. Every year he goes
To the marathon to help out with first aid. When the bomb blew, he
Ran toward the blast and saved a guy. He is who we are at our best.
Murder is an old tired story. It converts and convinces no one. Why
Murderers are so damned stupid is a mystery to me. There’s always
Women diving at the murderer, and guys running right at the blasts.
Do murderers not pay any attention? Hey, you kids plotting the next
Bomb, do you think people will pay more attention to whatever your
Ostensible reason is, if you tear their son to shreds with flying nails?
You think people will stop and say hey maybe those murderers have
A point? You idiotic fools. Every nail you fire is a nail in the coffin
Of the thing you claim to love, the thing you claim is holy, the thing
You just damaged and maybe even ruined. Do you guys not pay any
Attention to history? Here’s your lesson for today: Osama bin Laden
Wanted to elevate the faith he claimed to love, more than anyone for
A thousand years since it began – but he caused it more damage than
Anyone in a thousand years. His whole life was a joke and a criminal
Attack not only on innocents but on the religion he claimed he loved.
Do you guys not get it? What, you still want to do something savage?
I got an idea: set yourselves on fire. Take your time. We’ll consider it
A brave sacrifice. We’ll consider that the right victims died, for once.
